Volunteer of the Year - Wayne (Andy)
Orville Anderson
 |
Wayne (Andy) Orville
Anderson was born June
20, 1938, the youngest
of nine children. Age
17, following the
passing of both his
parents, he moved to
Port Alberni BC, to live
with an older sister. In
1958, he joined the RCMP
in Victoria BC and
underwent nine months of
training in Ottawa.
During this time, he
learned to ride a
motorcycle and served on
Parliament Hill, as well
as patrolling NCC
properties as a member
of Division A. According
to Andy his toughest
assignment was
patrolling Lovers Lane
in Rockcliffe Park.
After several attempts
to win her over, Andy
finally convinced Ellen
that he was the Mountie
of her dreams, and they
married in 1960 in
Ottawa. Shortly
thereafter he was
transferred to Winnipeg,
Manitoba, continuing his
policing duties.
However, Andy left the
force in 1960, and they
returned to Ottawa,
where he worked for
Statistics Canada. In
1965 he rejoined the
RCMP, working at
Headquarters until his
retirement in 1994.
Andy and Ellen raised
three boys, with the
oldest born in Winnipeg
and the other two born
in Ottawa. Since 1982,
Andy has been a proud
member of Montgomery
Legion, where he
considers himself a
first-class member. He
is actively involved in
the Branch,
participating in golf,
cards, karaoke and
supporting all Branch
activities. His most
significant contribution
has been his dedicated
work for the Poppy
Campaign, where he has
volunteered countless
hours in various
capacities.
Ellen, Andy’s wife is
also a strong supporter
of the Branch,
dedicating her time to
knitting afghans for
fundraising, as well as
toques and mitts for
Veterans and the
homeless.
On behalf of myself and
all Branch members, I
want to extend a
heartfelt thank you to
Andy and Ellen for all
they have done for the
Branch and Veterans over
the years. We look
forward to many more
years of involvement and
support. |
